Sony 4K Ultra Short Throw Projector

It’s hard to argue that watching movies or playing video games on a giant projection screen elevates the experience to a whole new level. Until now this required mounting an unsightly projector at the back of the room and of course everyone walking in front of the screen interfered with the picture.  However  this ultra short throw projector changes all that.  Looking like a modern piece of furniture, it can be placed near a wall and shoot an image up to 147 inches.  Its 4K Ultra HD resolution offers the ultimate picture detail and experience.  We love the idea but not the price.  $30,000-$40,000.

Valve Unveils 13 Steam Boxes at CES

There have always been two or three systems that you have to choose between. The catch is you have to choose. If you buy an XBOX1, you can’t play with your friends on PS4. It doesn’t matter that, save for a handful of titles, you are both playing the exact same games. That’s why Valve’s unveiling of the Steam Box is such a game changer. By releasing thirteen (or more) separate machines from multiple hardware manufacturers; Valve has created a software platform that has outside companies competing with compatible hardware. This encourages constantly evolving hardware much like with PC gaming and the competition will drive down prices. There are no release dates, specs or prices confirmed as of yet, but it’s likely that there will be a spectrum of price and performance. While the financially frugal can purchase a lower end model that still plays all the games, just not as pretty; the graphics obsessed are free to get the super powered behemoth model at a premium. The controller looks a little strange, but for all the games on Steam it might be worth picking up. Sign up for a free Steam account and take a look through their games library at

Linn Sondek 40th Anniversary LP12 Turntable

Listening to a high-end music system goes hand in hand with enjoying a glass of fine scotch. Only 40 of these will be made.  As part of the package you get a 40-year-old bottle of Highland Park.  Such spoils are the dream of all Guydsters but of course they don’t come cheap.  $40,000.

Turn Movement into Music with Augg Motion Synth

There’s a really cool Wired Talk where Imogen Heap demonstrates the ability to control music through movement, with the help of motion control gloves and a lot of tech. Auug has created a similar, more cost friendly app and peripheral that use the sensors in your phone to replicate this awesome technology. With the Motion Synth you can not only play any notes from a musical scale, but also raise/lower the scale with the use of hand gestures. The Auug Grip holds your phone and allows you to hit the eight buttons with ease. You can program sounds in like any synthesizer and add voice effects for those like myself that love to sing, but sound like garbage. Augg is currently only compatible with your iPhone or iPod touch due to the shape of the grip (sorry Android users). Pledge $68 at

Chinon Legato iPhone Passive Speaker Dock

Chinon Handcrafted Passive Speaker Dock for iPhone

At Guydster we love cool stuff and the Chinon Legato speaker is just about the coolest iPhone accessory we’ve come across.  Constructed out of ash hardwood, the Legato looks like a mini gramophone and uses a passive horn speaker, sculpted for acoustic perfection, to organically amplify the sound played by the iPhone’s speaker.  It boosts the sound up to 6 decibels which makes it ideal for personal listening or background music.  Musically, the Legato is designed to improve and increase the mid, mid-low and mid high frequency region, namely from 150 Hertz to 8500 hertz – this is the region where the important primary notes of musical instruments and human vocals occur. It is compatible with the iPhone 4, 4s, 5, 5s and 5c models.  $249.

The World’s First all Titanium Gettler Guitar

Here’s a cool Kickstarter campaign from Russell Rubman, who has made the world’s first Guitar composed entirely out of titanium. Based off the Gittler Guitar from the 70s, Rubman has perfected the minimalist design of a guitar with no neck or body. Being built from titanium, the new Gittler Guitar is made for longevity and quality. Their new headstock “string lock” mechanism holds each string in an individual vice, which makes changing strings a breeze. Each string also has its own pickup, meaning a boost in the clarity of the player’s sound. There are LED backlights to illuminate the fret board and add to the futuristic feel of the instrument. Get your own by pledging $2,000.

Libratone Loop Speaker

There are plenty of wireless speakers out there but let’s face it, most lack severely in the style department. But the Libratone Loop isn’t one of them.  This speaker combines the functionality and freedom of wireless sound in a slim, stylish package.  The Libratone Loop has a circular design that’s wrapped in fine, changeable Italian wool covers, available in eight different colors.  Thanks to built-in AirPlay and DLNA support you can stream music it from your smartphone/tablet/Mac/PC, while the PlayDirect feature eliminates the need for a Wi-Fi network.  A 3.5mm jack is also offered for those who still like to use cables.  The Libratone Loop offers two ribbon tweeters and a passive bass radiator that combine to produce a fuller sound than most wireless speakers.  Its stand allows it to sit on any flat surface, like a shelf, but it can also be wall-mounted. $499.

Nikon 1 AW1 Camera

The thing about extreme sports is you probably won’t risk the safety of your outrageously expensive camera to get those amazing shots. It’s also why there aren’t any high quality photos taken at keggers. Whether you’re an adventurous photographer or a sloppy drunk that prefers high quality drunk shots, you definitely need the new 1 AW1 from Nikon. This is the world’s first interchangeable lens camera that is shock, water and freeze proof. Nikon has also released two new lenses as tough as the camera. There’s the 1 NIKKOR AW 11-27.5mm f/3.5-5.6 with a 2.5 times zoom range and the 1 NIKKOR AW 10mm f/2.8 for those wide angle shots. The camera itself takes 14.2 megapixel photos, shoots 1080p video; simultaneously if needed and you can shoot slow motion video at either 400 or 1200fps for those epic spills off the white water raft or the bar stool. The camera with both lenses will be available in October for around $1,000.

Sony HMZ-T3W Head Mounted Display

A few months back we featured the Oculus Rift, a virtual reality headset poised to change the way we experience our favourite games, movies and TV shows by truly immersing the wearer in the experience. Well it seems that this holiday season, Sony will be releasing its own headset that just might make the Rift obsolete. Touting extremely high quality audio and video, the HMZ-T3W will feature two OLED screens capable of 720p video which will be like looking at a 750 inch screen from twenty meters away. The onboard headphones will give you a crisp 7.1 channel surround sound. While both systems are capable of 3D, Oculus has revealed plans for a 1080p HD. The Rift’s head-tracking motion controls and double the field of view may give it the edge for more immersive gaming, but what the HMZ-T3W lacks in field of view, it makes up for with the ability to look down and see your mouse and keyboard. Sony’s machine is also more compatible with all of your devices meaning you can play Grand Theft Auto 5 and literally everything else instead of just a handful of titles. No price point yet, but expect to pay a hefty sum. For all the details check out

Bose QuietComfort 20i Acoustic Noise Cancelling Headphones

It’s no wonder why Bose has been the number one name in crisp, clean sound for as long as any of us can remember. This is because the company is a specialist, focusing only on one thing: sound. So, it should come as no surprise that Bose would create a set of ear buds that rival most full sized headphones in sound quality and noise reduction. The proprietary Stay Hear+ tips design will ensure the buds sit comfortably in your ear, but the big draw are their noise cancelling capabilities. You can also turn on “Aware Mode” which will allow you to hear surrounding danger (i.e. crazy drivers and mountain lions) while listening to your tunes. And no, this mode doesn’t mean just turning off the noise cancelling feature; the outside sounds are picked up by the mic and played through the speakers. $329.99.

Apple iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c

Apple’s new iPhone 5s will blow your socks off thanks to its lightning fast A7 chip, the first 64-bit desktop-class architecture to be featured in a smartphone – if you’re into that kind of thing.  While the size of the enclosure and screen have not changed, most of the internals have been significantly upgraded.  The iPhone 5s features an all-new 8 megapixel iSight camera with a larger f/2.2 aperture and a new, larger sensor with 1.5? pixels for better sensitivity and low-light performance, resulting in better pictures. The new phone promises up to two-times faster auto-focus, faster photo capture, automatic image and video stabilization, and better dynamic range. The new True Tone flash variably adjusts color and intensity for over 1,000 combinations, so photos taken with a flash appear more natural. A new FaceTime HD camera allows for better low-light performance.  Finally, the iPhone 5s also introduces Touch ID, an innovative way to unlock your phone with your fingerprint, built into the home button.  Rounding out the package is the new iOS 7, which Apple claims to be the most significant iOS update since the original iPhone.  The brand new iPhone 5c is designed for those with a smaller budget and while it looks the same as the 5s, it has a plastic case, offers a less powerful processor and a scaled down set of features.  $100-$200 (iPhone 5c), $200-$400 (iPhone 5s).

Samsung KN55S9C Curved Screen OLED TV Now Shipping

Samsung’s first OLED TV is going to knock your socks off!   TV manufacturers have teased us with OLED TV prototypes for many years and now the first big-screen OLED sets are finally starting to hit stores.  Last month, LG announced the US availability of its 55-inch 55EA9800 curved screen OLED TV.  Now Samsung has began shipping its very first 55-inch curved screen OLED TV to US retailers.  What makes us so excited about this TV tech?  In addition to being truly super-flat, it blows away the picture quality of any plasma and LCD/LED sets.  OLED TVs don’t require a backlight or color filters, which allows them to display absolute blacks, a nearly unlimited contrast ratio and the richest, most accurate images we’ve ever seen.  Since the response times of OLED screens are exponentially faster than conventional TVs, these sets have virtually no motion blur or crosstalk in 3D images.  Samsung’s MultiView feature allows two people to simultaneously watch completely different full-screen Full-HD content, even in 3D on the same display (using active 3D glasses, which contain built-in speakers).   As you might expect, this TV is also loaded with Samsung’s latest Smart TV features.  Oh yeah, if all this wasn’t enough, the KN55S9C also has an awesome curved screen.  This just may be the ultimate Guydster TV!  $8,999.
